Foster/Adopt Parents: There is a “Togetherness” in Our Loneliness

When a child is removed from their home and placed in foster care they come broken and lost. They need someone to love them with consistency, help them put their pieces back together again and provide a safe and nurturing environment so they can thrive.

While this maybe interesting to some of you, I am sharing my heart more directly to those who are or have fostered or adopted children. Who knows it may even speak to those of you who have been considering doing this. This isn’t being written for sympathy. Because those fostering or those who have adopted are not looking for any kind of sympathy. We do what we do because we love what we are doing.  It is simply my prayer that something from our personal experience will spark inspiration, give direction or encouragement to one of you!  I want people who foster/adopt to know…..that in their moments of loneliness, there is still a togetherness!  It comes from others who are going through the same kinds of things. Tough things…..sometimes Really Tough Things!

With each child we’ve had in our home it’s been a different journey.  We’ve had 21 foster children in our home over the last 10 years and three that we have adopted.  And with all of them, we have gone about picking up and putting together their broken and lost pieces in the same ways.  Without God alone as our strength, we couldn’t do it.  He has been faithful in supplying us wisdom and direction.  He has never left us on any part of our difficult journeys.  But that doesn’t mean that sometimes the journey hasn’t been lonely.

The road to adoption through foster care, fostering a child for a period of time, or doing respite (short relief help) for other foster families, can be filled with despair, days of hopelessness and loneliness too.  A great family support system and a church family for support is a must!  But even they don’t ever really understand it.   A great number of people try to figure us foster families out. They even say to themselves….Why on earth would someone willingly take another person’s child into their home with so much brokenness?  And well, we are saying…Why on earth wouldn’t everyone want to help the broken?  Are they not all God’s children first?

Nobody really get’s us foster parents and families.  They don’t really know what to say, how to encourage or what to do to help. So don’t be alarmed if you learn pretty quickly, that it maybe a lonely road at times.  We made the decision early on, that the lonely road was ok with us. We have had to keep our focus on the child’s needs and not our own need to be understood.  Don’t expect others to know what to say, how to help or what you may need from them as far as support.  There will be many times you yourself will not know what it is you need!

The one thing that is absolute was our need for Prayer!  We have received them often and many of them have been answered timely!  We have spent our days focusing on being obedient rather then worrying about what other’s are saying, thinking or maybe even snickering about. Bad foster families are out there, just like bad parents…and fostering has definitely been talked about!   We stood and still stand completely confident in our God.  He alone has supplied us with all that we have needed and more!

Before we ever give an answer to the Placement Coordinator calling us about a child being removed, we have always prayed first! This is not always to their liking, because they want an answer immediately. But asking the Lord first, if it is his will for us, has been the only way! Waiting on his direction has always proven best.

We’ve remained firm in our faith and grounded in His word. We know that God only gives us what we can handle. And it’s by his strength and not our own anyways.  So, we trust him completely.  With every obstacles, diversity and frustration that comes with a crazy court system and biological family member that can appear out of the wood work. We know that the system may seem out of control at times…..but Our God Never Loses Control!

Be encouraged that in your moments, days or longer times of feeling lonely….you are not ever alone!  God is with you!  If you feel you are the only person in the world….find comfort in knowing their are so many others like you!  They are also fighting battles, mending struggles, sorting out feelings and being a child advocate with concerns just like you!

So, when you ever feel you have no one…this blog is a testimony that you always have someone!  Me!!!!!  My husband and I, our family, and SOOOOOOO many other foster and adoptive parents all over the world really.  We stand united and share the same hearts. We share in your loneliness and totally get what you are doing!   We understand you!   We stand by you!   We support you through your sleepless nights, long court days and the child tantrums that come out of nowhere and last for hours!   So many of us are actually in the trenches trying to heal scars, mend hearts and restore families just like you!

In your loneliness and in your moments of doubt, remember that foster and adoptive parents experience a “togetherness” and an understanding that is shared without having to express any words.  It’s a connection made within our similar hearts. We get each other like nobody else. So, know that you are not alone in your travels. Our God and others will be right by your side no matter where the road may lead you.

With each child’s brokenness that is mended, each child’s family that has been put back together again and for each child that finds his or her forever home…. We Celebrate Together!  There is an unspeakable “togetherness” of people cheering you on!  These people are ones who are doing the same as you. Loving the hurting children in our foster care system despite their own times of loneliness.

So, keep keeping on….and press through bouts of loneliness!

Be Obedient and Believe in Your Precious Call!

HOPE…..Is Everything You Need!

There are many terms in scripture like faith, hope, love, joy, grace, peace, etc. that we come across as we read our Bibles.  What is HOPE?  A modern idea of hope is “to wish for, to expect, but without certainty of the fulfillment; to desire very much, but with no real assurance of getting your desire.” According to biblical usage, “hope” is an indication of certainty. “Hope” in scripture means “a strong and confident expectation.

Hope deals with things we can’t see or haven’t received or both.  Hope is the confident expectation we have with certainty, that Gods word is true. When we know that what the Word says has occurred or will occur in accordance to what is written…..we have HOPE.

Romans 8:24-25 For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

When we possess a biblical HOPE it changes us.  It doesn’t allow us to escape from reality or keep us from problems. It doesn’t keep us drifting from one thing to the next either.  If we have a biblical HOPE based on believing Gods promises are true than it gives us results and keep us in line with life….and death.

HOPE Changes us…..

How we see things –This is our temporary home.

What we value –We become heavenly minded instead of earthly minded.

What we do with our lives –How we use our time, our gifts, and our talents.

HOPE gives us power to live courageously, to be all God has called us to be in Christ.

HOPE gives us Rewards & Blessings….

  • It gives us joy and peace   -Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • It gives us protection    -Psalm 33:18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His loving kindness,
  • It gives us strength, courage, boldness   -Psalm 31:24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage, All you who hope in the LORD.
  • It gives us endurance, comfort, confidence in the face of death   Thessalonians 4:13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve, as do the rest who have no hope.
  • It gives us confidence in ministry   –1 Timothy 4:10 For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.

Putting our HOPE in anything other than The Lord will hope-sometimes-thats-all-you-haveonly leave us disappointed.

God is called “the God of Hope.” This means He is the source of all real HOPE. If we are going to have HOPE (a confident expectation), it must come from Him for He alone has the power to give it.

–Psalm 62:5 My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him.

If you are without Christ, you are without God and without true HOPE.

HOPE depends on knowing the word of God, resting in His grace and living a spirit filled Life!

If you have a Biblical, Spiritual, Confident, HOPE In Jesus Christ…..You Really Do Have Everything!

Love is a Verb!

Love a Verb

The opportunities are endless!  We should be praying and looking for ways every day to put LOVE in Action.  They are all around us.  And after all….Love is a verb!

Everyone needs to be encouraged and deserves to be told they are loved. But when we choose to put our Love In Action we are making a conscious effort to Show Love through an Act of Service.  This Kinda Love can leave people speechless….

Examples of Actions of Love:

-becoming aware of a need and making a way to fulfill it is an Action of Love.

-facilitating a need to be met through others is an Action of Love.

-choosing to do something for someone to brighten there day is an Action of Love!

-making, creating or working on something for someone else is an Action of Love!

-visiting, teaching or helping someone is an Action of Love!

Christ Love was and still is an Action! He brought sight to the blind, made the lame walk and healed the sick, just to mention a few. He still puts His Love in Action for US every day!  As our provider, healer, protector…..

Nobody will ever put their Love in Action like He does for US!  He fulfilled our greatest need when He died on the cross to save us from our sin!

Wow! ~ Talk about Love in Action!  Nothing can separate us from that kind of Love…..EVER!

It’s an Act of Love that leaves us speechless! It is indescribable and way too hard for us to even begin to comprehend.

His Action of Love for us was full of….Forgiveness….Love….Mercy…. and His Amazing Grace!!

Each one of us can put our Love in Action far more often than we actually do.  We often fail to meet a need.  Sometimes we put ourselves first, or are just too busy to fulfill an opportunity to Show Christ Love!   But remember, His Love shines through us every time we Act on Love.  So, be careful not to miss the mark.  Be aware of those around you.  Watch for simple ways to make a difference in some ones day.  Sometime God places an opportunity right before you.  Pray that He reveals them to you and that you remain open to putting His Love… That Is In You…into Action.

When you step out, take action and make love more than a word, it becomes just that…More Than a Word!

Doing little is much if God is in it!

Let His Love….

The Greatest Love of All…

Shine through your Actions of Service to others…

Put His Love in Action today!

Does Your Life Have A Message?

Are the things you hold of importance in life, life changing to others?

Who do you inspire to be like?

Do you have a message to share? Or are you inspiring anyone?

To Inspire means:  to fill with an animating, quickening, or exalting influence; to produce or arouse a specified feeling, thought, etc.;

your life

The Bible was inspired by a divine influence. The writings were inspired by God. And oh what a message it is!

The 12 disciples were inspired and became Jesus followers. They trusted and believed  in His wonderful message. And it was one of His Amazing Grace!

I am inspired by a God who promises me an eternal future. He is creating in me a wonderful message, which I can only pray reaches others, as I live by Truth, Love and Service!

So, does your message share Hope?

Is it Inspiring anyone to know Jesus and transform their life?

Make a choice to make your message matter!

Lord,  Use us to inspire others to want to know you personally. Let our lives (at all times and in all things) share the message of you alone. Your love, Grace and Mercy. Forgive us for when we miss the mark and our words or actions distort our true life message of you. Help us to be better at reading your word more often and living your beautiful message more boldly. Create in us clean hearts oh God. Guide and direct us in the way that you want us to go….so that when we draw others to you, we also bring you all the glory deserved.

Amen

“Let it Go!” ~written by a Wife, Mom and Mimi

let-god-and-let-god

Why is “Letting Go and Letting God” one of the hardest things to do in our walk with the Lord?  Only sometimes are we able, without a question, to boldly drop it all at his feet and release it to God. But yet, when we choose to “Release it” or “Let it Go” we are allowing or enabling ourselves an escape from confinement; setting ourselves free from it. So I’ve had to ask myself….and I am asking YOU now. Why on earth would we choose to be confined by our situations and struggles, if we know that we can fully release them to God and be set free from them?

There are times that we become free from things, and because of doubt, fear, or lack of control, we slowly become held captive by them again. It’s better to continue to release it to God (daily) than it is for us to take it back and put it upon ourselves again and again. We can always depend on God’s ability in the outcome over our own.  He knows the BIG picture for our lives. He knows exactly what we need to strengthen our walk and draw us closer to him. He knows what we can use (after going through it) to bring him glory. We simply cannot choose to rely on ourselves over relying on our great God… for Anything!

“Letting God” becomes an act of faith in trusting our all-powerful and all-knowing God to handle it for us. Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

Let’s face it, every one of us deals with different life circumstances and situations. Each of our personalities and spiritual walks are different too. But through every situation in my life and as I have ministered to others going through difficult times, I have concluded the same thing. When we go through times and simply have no control, we all come to a point of knowing, that we cannot do it on our own.  Thank goodness, all we need to do is “Let Go and Let God.”  In that time, we need to know that no matter what, he will never lose control.  If we have chosen to release it to him in faith…then we have to pray and trust him to completely handle it.  Proverbs 3:5 ~Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

The sooner we can fully “Let Go” and become free from what has captured us….The sooner we can see his work, heal and grow through it all. Relying on him (who can do ALL things) takes it off of ourselves (who can’t completely do anything without him) and allows us to refocus on Everything!

“Letting God” should be our first choice in everything. We should quickly run into his open arms. “Letting Go” should be an easy decision. After all, we know that even through our very toughest times, he is still working things out for our good. Jeremiah 29:11 ~For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Do you need to “Let Go and Let God” for the first time?  Or once again?

This is my prayer….maybe it can also become yours.

 Lord,

Allow me to see you in all of life’s test and trials, just as clearly as I do in my triumphs and victories. Help me to rely on you first and be able to Let GO of the things I cannot control or change. Help me to understand I have the ability to not be held captive by life’s situations.  Give me the strength to trust you even when I do not understand or see your works.  I know you hold my family and my future in your steady, faithful, everlasting hands. Teach me to Let Go and Let YOU Lord!

Like the Starfish Story : Making a Difference One Child at a Time

alumni-starfish-story

As I walked along the seashore…

This young boy greeted me. He was tossing stranded starfish back to the deep blue sea. I said “Tell me why you bother, why you waste your time this way. There’s a million stranded starfish, does it matter, anyway?”

And he said, “It matters to this one. It deserves a chance to grow. It matters to this one. I can’t save them all I know. But it matters to this one; I’ll return it to the sea. It matters to this one, and it matters to me.”

As I walked into Social Services…

This little boy greeted me. I knew that he deserved a chance, the hope in his eyes I could see. Some say, “Tell me why you bother, why you spend your time this way. He is only one of thousands, does it matter anyway?”

And I said, “It matters to this one. He deserves a home I know.  It matters to this one. With our families help he will grow. But it matters to this one; I’ll help him become what God wants him to be.  It matters to this one, and it matters to me.”

~Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, Making a Difference~  Jude 1:22-23

There are so many ways you can make a difference In a child’s life. It may not be that you are called to Foster or to Adopt. Pray that the Lord reveals what it is you can do. You could sponsor a child through WorldHelp organization or start by teaching your neighbor’s children about Jesus. Look for opportunities to lend a helping hand, encourage and make yourself a positive influence in the lives of the children you come in contact with.

We can all make a difference! Together we can change the world. One child at a time!
